This introduction covers how a pitched roof is thatched with water reed in Ireland: how bundles are judged, how a roof is prepared, how courses are fixed from eaves to ridge, and how ridges, maintenance, fire safety and heritage rules are handled.

There are six lessons and a 10-question quiz. It builds on the free Taster.

It is an introduction only. It does not replace an apprenticeship, a structural check, insurance, or consent where a building is protected.

This course is taught from the practice of Mike Davies, who has 25 years specialising in thatching with water reed, working across Ireland as Heritage Thatching (heritage-thatching.com) and Thatching Ireland (thatchingireland.com).

Hands-on next step: nothing replaces time on a roof. Book a hands-on water reed thatching workshop at Boglands: see dates and packages at bog.ie/book.
